Timothee Chalamet, starring as Willy Wonka in the new Wonka movie, confirms it has seven musical numbers. Read on to learn more about the upcoming film.
Captivating young minds and sparking kids’ fantasies for decades, the world’s greatest chocolatier Willy Wonka is all set to make a comeback this year. But this time, instead of seeing him giving children a tour of his iconic chocolate factory, we will see a young Wonka on his adventures and meeting with Oompa-Loompas. Scheduled to release in December 2023, the movie stars Timothee Chalamet in the lead and is directed by Paul King, best known for his Paddington movies.
The origin story of Dahl’s sugary chocolatier is a musical fantasy with seven originals that Chalamet seems to be quite excited about.
While everything about the movie was kept very hush-hush for a long time, Timothee’s photos from the set sparked a frenzy on social media, with people taking a dig at the actor and making memes on the new Wonka. Responding to the reaction, Chalamet revealed how the photos are misleading, and Wonka is a fun movie with seven musicals.
“You know what’s really funny about that is, it’s so misleading. This movie is so sincere, it’s so joyous.”
The Dune star is the third to play the role of Roald Dahl’s iconic chocolatier after Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp. But he is the first actor to play a young Wonka, depicting his life before he became the chocolate maestro that Dahl featured in his iconic book. The movie is co-written by Paul King (who’s also the director) and Simon Farnaby – Barry the Security Guard in Paddington 2.
The movie will be released under the banner of Warner Bros., which describes it as a film narrating the “vivid mythical beginnings of the imaginative young inventor before he becomes the renowned scrumdiddlyumptious Mozart of chocolate.”
Like the previous theatrical depictions of Willy Wonka, this one will also feature him in a velvet jacket and brown top hat. While the movie trailer was shown at CinemaCon2023, it’s not available to the public yet. However, per the details shared by those present at the event, the movie shows a young Wonka with magical chocolates that can make people float, being hunted by a chocolate cartel as he attempts to open a chocolate shop.
There has been a mixed reaction to this Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel till now. But what the audience seems to be most upset about is Hugh Grant being cast as an Oompa-Loompa. While the director confirms that he will appear as a tiny, orange-skinned native of Loompaland, as we have seen in previous movies, not many people seem to be happy about the choice. Some other British actors that will be seen in the movie include Rowan Atkinson (our very own Mr. Bean), Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Simon Farnaby, Matt Lucas, and Sally Hawkins.
Whether or not the new Wonka movie will meet the audience’s expectations, only time will tell, but given that it has seven musicals, we hope it will be a fun watch.
